The Elan was the first and last front-wheel drive sportcar of the Lotus. At the time the Britsh brand belonged to GM which spent 37 milion dollars into the development of this vehicle. The goal was to build the best Lotus ever built that could wear the Elan name proudly following its classical predecessor. The succes however eluded even though the advanced technologies such as the 4 disc brakes and the double wishbone suspension that was tested on 1-milion km by the factory. As a result the excellent construction became a true rarity.
Peter Stevens – once tutor of the Royal Collage of Art – created the plans of the Elan. Throughout his carrier, he was working as a cheif designer for brands such as Lotus and McLaren
